Introduction

EZPZ is an iOS app where users simultaneously doodle animations and create techno beats. It is a showcase of the Chroma Instrument: a custom audio engine that has been in development since September 2021 that powers sophisticated sample sequencing and effects. EZPZ’s development started in July 2022 and the MVP was launched in March 2023.

From a product development perspective, the brief for EZPZ was to define a simple schema to interact with the complex features Chroma Instrument provides. These interactions should be relatively easy for anyone to pick up, use, and enjoy. In realizing this, the team’s hypothesis continues to be:

<aside> ⛰️ Configuring the schema of a sophisticated software engine and packaging it with a middleware that provides simple end-user interaction empowers a small team to rapidly make consumer products that champion new communities and ultimately new customers in audio entertainment.

This document outlines the team’s process (methodology, results, analysis, conclusion) in building the first consumer product with Chroma Instrument. The process of making EZPZ also laid the foundation for potentially new consumer products and/or different iterations of EZPZ.

Methodology

In July 2022, with Chroma Instrument established, we spent 3x three month periods to develop the EZPZ MVP: Prototyping, Design, and Packaging. Each phase both tested Chroma Instrument and refined the concept of what EZPZ came to be. To stay organized, we used a Dropbox Paper and collectively contributed to tasks each week while viewing it as our source of truth during weekly meetings.
